Woman Tries to Avoid Police Checkpoint

On June 4, 2019, at approximately 2:00 p.m., Bell Island RCMP were conducting a checkpoint on Davidson Avenue near the Monsignor Bartlett Memorial Arena when officers observed a van approaching the checkpoint. The driver attempted to avoid the checkpoint and ended up colliding with a residence.

Police approached the driver, a 35-year-old woman from Bell Island, who had two young children in the vehicle not properly secured in child seat restraint systems. The driver had an expired driver’s licence permit.

Minor damage resulted to the vehicle and residence. The woman was ticketed for a number of offences under the Highway Traffic Act.

RCMP NL conducts checkpoints to enforce the Highway Traffic Act checking for documentation such as driver’s licence, registration and insurance, as well as to check for sobriety and other violations of the Highway Traffic Act and/or Criminal Code. Drivers who attempt to avoid coming through a checkpoint raise suspicion among officers and those drivers can expect police will follow up with a traffic stop.
