RCMP Issuing Tips on Back to School Safety #nltraffic

Today is the first day of school for most children across the province.

The RCMP are reminding parents, teachers, students and motorists of some safety tips.

  • Please stop when the bus stops. Traffic travelling in both directions must stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop sign out.

  • Slow Down! Always respect the posted speed limit in school zones.

  • Be careful of crosswalks! All motorists must yield to pedestrians at crosswalks.

  • Get off your phone! Using a cell phone is a form of distracted driving. Motorists can be charged under the Highway Traffic Act for using a handheld device while driving.

  • Watch out for the crossing guards. Many daycares and schools have crossing guards to help the students cross the roads safely during peek traffic hours.
