Residents Reminded of Responsible Off-Road Vehicle Usage

Service NL is reminding users of the regulations for the safe operation of off-road vehicles in the province.

Both ATVs and snowmobiles must be registered with the Motor Registration Division of Service NL and have plates affixed to the vehicle which are clearly visible. Insurance may be required for these vehicles, and their operation is prohibited while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Drivers are not permitted to operate vehicles on managed trails without a trail permit, must comply with all trail rules and regulations, and must not operate an ATV or snowmobile to chase, harass, worry, injure or kill wildlife. Operators are also not permitted to carry more passengers than the number for which the vehicle is built.

At all times, it is an offence to operate an ATV or snowmobile without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other persons or property.

In terms of age requirements, the minimum age for operating an adult-sized ATV in this province is 16. Youth aged 14 and 15 are only permitted to operate ATVs that have a maximum engine size of 90cc, and under adult supervision. A person under 14 years of age is not permitted to operate any size ATV. For snowmobiles, a person must be at least 13 years old to operate a snowmobile (may be 12 with supervision of a person 19 years or older).

Helmets are mandatory for ATV usage in the province.
