Federal Government Plans to Buy Three Icebreakers for Coast Guard

The Federal Government has announced plans to buy three icebreakers for the Coast Guard.

No price tag was included with the announcement, Davie shipyard in Quebec will acquire the contract.

The three new vessels will relieve pressure on the Coast Guard's aging fleet.

Several major vessels have undergone extensive refits in recent decades, most notably CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent in place of procuring the Polar 8 class of icebreakers.

In 2012, the Government of Canada announced a procurement of 24 helicopters to replace the current fleet.
