Airlines Accused of Telling Student to Flush Hamster Down the Toilet

A student is accusing a Spirit Airlines employee of telling her to flush her emotional support hamster down the toilet.

Belen Aldecosea, 21, of Miami Beach, Florida, was taking a flight from Baltimore to South Florida back in November.

She said that she called the airline prior to booking the ticket to see if she could carry her dwarf hamster, Pebbles, on the flight with her. She said that the airline said it was fine.

When she was preparing to board the plane, she was told by staff that the hamster would not be permitted on the plane and to flush it down the toilet.

Spirit Airlines spokesman Derek Dombrowski said that Aldecosea was misinformed that the animal was allowed on the flight. The airline also denies an employee suggested she flush the rodent down the toilet.

Spirit Airlines is an ultra-low-cost carrier headquartered in Miramar, Florida. It is the 7th largest commercial airline in the US.
