George River and Torngat Mountains Caribou Not Added to Endangered Species List

The George River and Torngat Mountains caribou herds have not been added to the list of endangered species.

The provincial government has decided not to add the animals to the list despite a rapid decline due to over-hunting.

The decisions was made with recommendations from Labrador Indigenous groups.

There is a conservation effort underway.

A ban on hunting caribou in Labrador has been in place since 2013.
