Minister Hawkins Wishes Hindu Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a Happy Diwali

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, wishes all Hindu Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a happy Diwali.

Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights, an official holiday in many countries where it is also enjoyed by members of other religions.

In Hinduism, Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. Homes, businesses, and temples are decked out in festive lights as families gather to light candles, pray, enjoy fireworks and treats, and exchange gifts.

This year, Diwali will be celebrated on October 18 or 19 depending on the region.

In The Way Forward on Immigration in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Provincial Government committed to publicly acknowledge cultural holidays and events. Recognizing these celebrations increases awareness of diversity in this province and helps newcomers feel welcome in their communities.
