New Waterford Mining Disaster Remembered in Salmon Cove
The New Waterford mining disaster will be remembered today in Salmon Cove.
On July 25, 1917, 65 people were killed in a coal mine explosion at New Waterford's No. 12 Colliery.
Of those lost were nineteen Newfoundlanders, seven of which were from Salmon Cove.
The bodies were carried home on the SS Kyle.
Today New Waterford is a fishing port that has been in economic decline in recent years.
