A parade will take place at 9:45 a.m. this morning at 5 Wing Goose Bay and a wreath laying ceremony takes place at 12:30 p.m. this afternoon at the War Memorial in St. John’s to mark the 77th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

The Battle of Britain was a military campaign of the Second World War, in which the Royal Air Force defended the United Kingdom against large-scale attacks by the German Air Force.

Altogether in the fighter battles, the bombing raids, and the various patrols flown between 10 July and 31 October 1940 by the Royal Air Force, 1495 aircrew were killed, of whom 449 were fighter pilots, 718 aircrew from Bomber Command, and 280 from Coastal Command. Among those killed were 47 airmen from Canada.

Other events are taking place across the province.
