Government Marks World Environment Day

Yesterday marked World Environment Day, which is acknowledged as the United Nations most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of the environment.

The theme for World Environment Day this year is “Connecting People to Nature” and encourages people to experience their natural surroundings and participate in biodiversity and conservation-related activities.

The Provincial Government recognizes the connection between a healthy environment and the social, economic and spiritual well-being of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources works collaboratively with environmental organizations throughout the province to engage in stewardship activities to support a healthy environment. This includes increasing protection for wildlife habitat, improving provincial habitat management policies, restoring wetlands, and enhancing environmental education.

The Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment strives to ensure that residents live in safe and sustainable communities. Officials support environmental protection and enhancement by implementing water resource and pollution prevention regulations and policies, and coordinating environmental impact assessments.
