Minister Crocker Pleased with Commitment for Northern Cod Annual Scientific Assessment #nlpoli

The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources, is pleased the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada will commit $14 million over the next five years to conduct full northern cod stock assessments starting in 2017-18.

Minister Crocker addressed the need to conduct full annual assessments during the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans consultations last fall because these assessments provide timely, accurate data on which to base critical future management decisions.

As the fishery transitions to a groundfish-based industry, future management efforts must focus on long-term sustainability to ensure the transition provides optimal benefits to fish harvesters, processors, workers and coastal communities.

The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources is already engaged in preparing for the transition of the fishery through the Seafood Innovation and Transition Program and the establishment of a Fisheries Advisory Council.
