OH&S Charges Laid Against Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro #nlpoli


Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro has been charged with violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations arising from an incident that occurred on April 10, 2015. The charges are the result of an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Division of Service NL.

The incident, which resulted in serious injuries to a worker, occurred at the thermal generating station in Holyrood.

The company has been charged with six violations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations which relate to its alleged failure to:

  • Provide and maintain a safe workplace and equipment;

  • Provide the necessary information, instruction, training and supervision;

  • Ensure that safe work procedures were followed;

  • Ensure that regular inspections were made at intervals that would ensure safe work conditions were maintained;

  • Ensure that equipment was used and operated in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, and

  • Ensure that work areas were arranged to allow the safe movement of workers, equipment and materials.

The first appearance is scheduled for May 8, 2017, at Provincial Court in St. John’s.
