Police again warning of Fentanyl on the Burin Peninsula

The RCMP is again warning the general public of a growing concern regarding Fentanyl on the Burin Peninsula. Information has been received that cocaine containing Fentanyl is being sold in the area. Fentanyl is a fast-acting opiate that is estimated to be 100 times more potent than morphine and 20-50 times more toxic than heroin. It has legitimate clinical uses for treating chronic pain, but is extremely dangerous when consumed illicitly. Perhaps even more dangerous is the fact that Fentanyl can be added to other drugs without the user’s knowledge. Two milligrams of pure Fentanyl (the size of about two grains of salt) is enough to kill the average adult. It is odourless and tasteless, and therefore hard to detect. The effects of Fentanyl occur very quickly after use. It can cause immediate incapacitation and sometimes death if not treated immediately after exposure. Anyone who believes they may have come into contact with this drug should seek immediate medical attention. This warning is intended to inform the public of the dangers of Fentanyl and prevent a possible tragedy.
