Back on February 18, 1942, the American naval vessels USS Truxtun, USS Pollux, and USS Wilkes were were heading to their military base in Argentia.

Only the Wilkes made it.

The USS Truxtun and USS Pollux went aground on the jagged rocks off the south coast during a storm.

Waves broke the ships to pieces.

There were 156 aboard the Truxtun and the Pollux was carring 233.

Only 186 lived.

Residents of St. Lawrence and Lawn traveled to the wreck sites through blowing snow to haul men out of the ocean.
