RNC Warning of Cheque Frauds

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Economic Crime Section is issuing a warning to the public that individuals have been attempting to cash fraudulent Government of Canada cheques.

The Economic Crime Section has received several reports that three men have been attempting to or have successfully cashed Government of Canada cheques at banks throughout the Northeast Avalon region.

In one instance, one of the men left behind an out of province ID card which we do not believe is authentic, and may be going by the name Mackenzie Augustin Maxance. All three persons involved were described as being dark skinned men with one being further described as having short dark hair and a dark mustache/goatee.

This investigation is ongoing, and police are warning retailers and financial institutions to be extra vigilant when being presented with cheques, specifically from Government of Canada. For more information on authenticating Government of Canada cheques, please visit: http://www.tpsgc-pwgsc.gc.ca/recgen/txt/mess-entreprise-businesses-eng.html.
