1 Military Member Dead, 5 Missing After Helicopter Crash

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, and General Jonathan Vance, Chief of the Defence Staff held a press conference this morning regarding a Canadian helicopter that crashed on Wednesday in the Mediterranean Sea.

SLt. Abbigail Cowbrough was the crew member that died after a CH-148 Cyclone helicopter that was on the HMCS Fredericton crashed. Five other crew members are still missing.

Officials say the helicopter went missing in the sea between Greece and Italy.

The aircraft was participating in a NATO exercise off the coast of Greece.

An investigation is underway to determine what happened.

On 20 January 2020, Fredericton departed Halifax as part of Operation Reassurance in the Mediterranean and Black seas.
