Winter storm eyes eastern Newfoundland as closures mount

Winter storm watches and warnings remain in effect across the Avalon Peninsula, Burin Peninsula, Clarenville, and Bonavista Peninsula.

Snow is expected to begin this morning and become heavy at times by the afternoon.

Strong winds and falling temperatures along with the fresh snowfall will result in poor visibility in blowing snow, especially tonight.

Conditions will improve early Saturday morning, although some local blowing snow will persist on Saturday due to strengthening winds.

On the Northern Avalon Peninsula snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 cm is expected while 25 to 35 cm is expected on the Southern Avalon Peninsula. Winds will gust between 60 and 80 km/h.

For the Burin and Bonavista peninsulas, and Clarenville, 10 to 20 cm of snow is expected and winds will gust to 60 km/h.
