Tibb’s Eve is a term unique to Newfoundland and Labrador. It marks the unofficial start to the Christmas season. The day is traditionally associated with social gatherings and celebrations ahead of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The phrase traces back to an old English and Irish expression — “on Tibb’s Eve” — meaning something that would never happen, as the day did not exist on the calendar.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, the saying was eventually given a real date. By the mid-20th century, Dec. 23 had become known locally as Tibb’s Eve, particularly in outport communities, where it served as a night of celebration before the quieter, more religious observances that followed.

Though not an official holiday, Tibb’s Eve remains a widely recognized cultural tradition.

As Tibb’s Eve celebrations get underway, plan a safe way home. Driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs remains a leading cause of serious and fatal collisions in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Arrange a designated driver, use a taxi or rideshare, or stay overnight if alcohol is involved.
