Premier Tony Wakeham is expressing condolences following a tragic incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta.

Wakeham says he contacted Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to offer support and condolences on behalf of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

In a statement, Wakeham extended his sympathies to the families, friends and fellow service members of those who lost their lives. He also wished those injured a full recovery.

“Newfoundland and Labrador has a proud and enduring military history, and our connection to the Canadian Armed Forces runs deep,” Wakeham said.

He noted that the tragedy affects the military community, the province and the country as a whole, adding that Newfoundland and Labrador stands alongside the people of Wainwright, Albertans and members of the military community.

Wakeham also thanked military and civilian first responders, health-care professionals and community members supporting those affected.

Flags at Confederation Building and government offices across the province will be lowered to half-mast in honour of those who lost their lives.
