U.S. President Donald Trump is warning Canada it could face steep trade penalties if it moves forward with a trade deal with China.

In a post shared on social media, Trump said that if Canada were to become a “drop-off port” for Chinese goods destined for the United States, the consequences would be severe. He claimed such an arrangement would allow China to undermine Canada’s economy, businesses and social fabric.

Trump said that should Canada strike a deal with China under those conditions, the United States would respond by imposing a 100 per cent tariff on all Canadian goods and products entering the U.S.

“If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.,” Trump wrote.

Trump also referred to Prime Minister Mark Carney as “Governor Carney.”
