Thousands of Newfoundland Power customers are still without power this morning.

There are outages in the St. John's metro area, northern Avalon, in the Clarenville area, up through Bonavista and as far west as Norris Arm.

Very strong winds tore across the Island overnight, knocking out power to many, and Newfoundland Power reports that in some cases, severe weather and difficult conditions are affecting the response time to some outages.

During a Power Outage

  • Use flashlights instead of candles to reduce fire risk.

  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to preserve food; a full freezer can keep food frozen for about 48 hours.

  • Avoid downed power lines and report them immediately to Newfoundland Power.

  • Use generators safely, outdoors only and away from windows or doors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

  • Check on vulnerable neighbours, including seniors and those with medical needs.

After Power Is Restored

  • Wait a few minutes before plugging electronics back in to avoid damage from power surges.

  • Discard spoiled food that may have thawed or warmed above safe temperatures.

  • Reset clocks, alarms and heating systems as needed.

  • Report any electrical damage or flickering power to Newfoundland Power.
