Strong storm to hit the province


A powerful storm is on the way to Newfoundland and Labrador.


Newfoundland will see impacts later this afternoon. Winds in Newfoundland will be extremely strong. It will mostly be a rain event for Newfoundland. In Labrador blizzard conditions are possible.


In Newfoundland, it will mostly be a rain and wind event. For eastern and southeastern areas of the island rainfall amounts between 30 and 50 mm are anticipated. Along the west coast, 15 to 30 mm of rain is expected. Over higher terrain, 30 to 50 mm could fall.


Across most of the west coast and central, winds will gust to 120 km/h. The Avalon and south coast could see gusts to 140 km/h. In the Wreckhouse area gusts to 150 km/h are possible.


Blizzard conditions are expected in most of Labrador from Hopedale to Black Tickle. In those areas, snowfall amounts will range from 15 to 20 cm in the Hopedale area to as much as 30 to 50 cm from Rigolet to Cartwright. Winds will gust from 110 to 150 km/h on Sunday.


For southeastern Labrador 15 to 30 cm of snow is expected. Winds will gust from 70 to 90 km/h.


You should have an emergency kit ready. Prepare for power outages and possible flooding.


Marine Atlantic has cancelled all crossings for today and warns that crossings on Sunday and Monday could be impacted.
