Stormy weekend ahead for the province
A low will push across the province beginning on Friday. The low will bring snow, rain, and freezing rain to the island and snow to Labrador.
Newfoundland
Snow will begin on Friday night for the Great Northern Peninsula. From Friday evening until Saturday evening 20 to 30 cm of snow is expected.
Snow is expected for central and western Newfoundland on Friday night. The snow will change to rain on Saturday with freezing rain. On Friday night snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 cm are expected. Heavy rain will fall on Saturday with 40 to 70 mm anticipated. Precipitation will change to freezing rain on Saturday night with 15 to 30 mm possible. The freezing rain could cause extended power outages and dangerous driving conditions. Significant snowmelt is also anticipated.
Rain is expected for areas east of Gander this weekend. Amounts of 40 to 60 mm are possible leading to snowmelt and the possibility of flooding.
Labrador
In southeastern Labrador, snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 cm are expected from Friday evening to Saturday night.
Travel Impacts
Marine Atlantic is anticipating that all crossings on Friday will be cancelled and the crossings for Saturday morning will also be cancelled.
