Stormy Weather Expected Across NL #nlwx


Rain will push across Newfoundland this evening and overnight and continuing through Tuesday. There could be some snow mixing in at first on the Great Northern Peninsula. Rain will come to an end late on Tuesday afternoon. We will get some snow across the west coast on Tuesday night. Strong winds are expected along the south and east coast Tuesday morning and afternoon. Winds will gust to about 80 km/h in the morning and could increase to over 100 km/h on the Burin Peninsula and the Avalon Peninsula on Tuesday afternoon. In the St. John's metro area winds could gust to 130 km/h. On Tuesday evening winds will increase along the west coast with gusts to 90 km/h expected, across the west side of the Northern Peninsula gusts to 120 km/h are possible.


There are wind and rainfall warnings in effect across Newfoundland. Along the south coast rainfall amounts of 50 to 100 mm of rain is possible, in central Newfoundland 25 to 40 mm is possible.


Snow is expected to move into Labrador overnight. Snow will continue until Wednesday morning for coastal areas. There are snowfall warnings, winter storm watches, and special weather statements in effect. Total amounts of about 15 cm are expected.

Ahead of the storm, Marine Atlantic has cancelled crossings for this evening and anticipates that there could be delays to crossings on Tuesday as well.
