A strong storm continues to pound Atlantic Canada with snow, ice pellets, freezing rain and rain.

In Newfoundland for the northern Avalon Peninsula including St. John's, rainfall amounts of 40 to 80 mm is expected. That rain will change to freezing rain at times some areas could see 15 to 30 mm of freezing rain.

Significant power outages are likely. The southern Avalon could end up with 150 mm of rain.

Central and northeastern sections of the province could see 45 to 70 cm of snow through tonight and early tomorrow.

15 to 30 cm is expected across western Newfoundland.

If a power outage occurs:

  • Turn off all tools, appliances and electronic equipment, and turn the thermostat(s) for the home heating system down to the minimum to prevent damage from a power surge.

  • Turn off all lights, except one inside and one outside.

  • Don't open your freezer or fridge unless it is absolutely necessary.

  • Never use charcoal or gas barbecues, camping heating equipment, or home generators indoors.

  • Use proper candle holders. Never leave lit candles unattended and keep out of reach of children. Always extinguish candles before going to bed.

  • Listen to your battery-powered or crank radio for information on the outage and advice from authorities.

  • Protect sensitive electrical appliances such as TVs, computer, and DVD players with a surge-protecting powerbar.

Home generator tips:

  • Ensure that the generator operates outdoors in well-ventilated conditions, well away from doors or windows, to prevent exhaust gases from entering the house.

  • Connect lights and appliances directly to the generator.
