Storm to bring heavy snow and mixed precipitation to Newfoundland
A low is expected to move into Newfoundland early on Thursday morning likely before dawn.
The low will bring snow to most of the Island with the exception of the Avalon Peninsula, Burin Peninsula, Clarenville, and the Bonavista Peninsula. In these areas, snow will mix with ice pellets and change to rain at times.
For central and the northwestern Avalon Peninsula snowfall amounts of 15 to 30 cm is possible. Some areas could see up to 40 cm. The heaviest snow will fall to the east of Gander to around Terra Nova. Winds will gust to 90 km/h in some areas on Thursday night.
For the St. John's metro area and southern Avalon, the weather will be messy. We are expecting snow, rain, and ice pellets. Snowfall amounts will range anywhere from 5 to 15 cm. About 10 to 20 mm of rain is excepted for St. John's with higher amounts over the southeastern Avalon. Winds will gust from 70 km/h to 110 km/h.
Conditions will improve overnight on Thursday.
