Storm Sewer, Shared-Use Path Upgrades to Begin on Whiteway Street in St. John's

Construction on storm sewer upgrades and a new shared-use path along Whiteway Street in St. John's is scheduled to begin the week of Aug. 3.

The City of St. John's said work will take place on Whiteway Street between Elizabeth Avenue and approximately 97 Whiteway Street and is expected to continue through October, weather and construction conditions permitting.

As part of the project, the existing sidewalk on the south side of Whiteway Street between Elizabeth Avenue and Guy Street will be replaced with a shared-use path designed to accommodate pedestrians and other active transportation users.

The city is advising residents and motorists to expect traffic delays throughout construction, with traffic control personnel and temporary traffic signals in place as needed.

The south-side sidewalk will be closed during the project, with alternate pedestrian routes provided.

Residents in the area will also experience brief interruptions to water service while fire hydrants are relocated. The contractor will provide at least 24 hours' notice to affected households before any planned service disruption.

Some properties may also experience temporary restrictions to driveway and vehicle access during construction. Residents affected by those closures will receive at least 24 hours' notice from the contractor.

In addition, community mailboxes in the area will be temporarily relocated to accommodate the work. Canada Post will notify affected customers directly.

The city is asking the public to follow all posted signage, barricades and directions from traffic control personnel while construction is underway.
