The City of St. John’s has released two new resources to help increase awareness and adoption of Universal Design in homes.

Universal Design is an approach to building and renovating that ensures spaces are usable by everyone — regardless of age, ability, or life stage. It focuses on features that make homes safer, more adaptable, and more comfortable for all residents, now and into the future.

The new guide and checklist provide tools for planners, builders, renovators, and homeowners. They show how Universal Design features can be integrated seamlessly and cost-effectively, helping to build homes that are adaptable and accessible without compromising style or function, reducing the need for costly renovations as needs change over time, supporting seniors, families, people with disabilities, and multigenerational households, and creating a more inclusive, sustainable, and future-ready housing stock.
