The St. John’s Regional Fire Department and the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1075 have partnered with Wounded Warriors Canada to strengthen mental health and wellness supports for firefighters and first responders.
“This partnership reflects a shared commitment between department leadership and Local 1075 to take care of the people who take care of our community,” said Fire Chief Sherry Colford. “Firefighters and first responders face unique challenges, and ensuring access to meaningful mental health and wellness resources is a responsibility we take seriously.”
Wounded Warriors Canada is a national organization that helps first responders and their families navigate the stresses of public safety work through programs focused on resilience and recovery.
“As president of the St. John’s Firefighters Association, our executive is proud to support this collaboration,” said IAFF President Jim O’Toole. “Mental health is a critical part of the overall wellbeing of our members. The work we do exposes them to situations most people never have to face, and partnerships like this ensure members and their families have access to the support, resources and programs they need. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.”
The partnership aims to expand the range of supports available to SJRFD members and their families while promoting a culture that prioritizes mental and emotional well-being.
“Given the complexity of situations faced by trauma-exposed professionals every day, no single organization can provide a complete solution for mental health and wellness,” said Scott Maxwell, chief executive officer of Wounded Warriors Canada. “Partnerships are vital. We are proud to announce this new partnership with SJRFD and IAFF Local 1075 and look forward to working together in the months and years to come.”
