St. John's adopts study identifying 13 wetlands for full protection

A study assessing 30 wetlands in areas of development interest across St. John's has been adopted by council, with 13 wetlands identified for full protection.
The Wetland Study Phase 2B assessed the sites using standardized ecological and functional criteria.
Fourteen additional wetlands will receive partial protection because they are located within protected floodplains. Two sites were determined to be manmade and not wetlands, while one wetland was identified as unprotected.
The study will guide future wetland protection decisions and require amendments to the Development Regulations to update wetland and waterway mapping.
Council unanimously approved the motion to adopt the study.
