The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is reminding boaters to make safety a top priority as Newfoundland and Labrador's recreational groundfish fishery opens.
The RNC said it expects higher-than-normal participation in the food fishery this year due to the extended season, bringing more vessels onto the water across the province.
Police are encouraging both experienced fishers and those heading out for the first time to be prepared for cold water temperatures and rapidly changing weather conditions.
The RNC is advising boaters to wear properly fitted personal flotation devices at all times and to inform a family member or friend of their travel plans, including their expected return time.
Boaters are also urged to inspect and pack all required safety equipment before departing, ensuring they have the necessary gear to respond to emergencies if they arise.
Authorities recommend carrying reliable communication devices, such as a fully charged cellphone or a VHF radio, and checking weather forecasts before heading out, while remaining prepared for sudden changes in conditions.
The RNC is also reminding operators to maintain safe speeds and share waterways responsibly with other boaters.
Police stressed that alcohol- and drug-impaired boating remains a serious safety concern. Impaired operation of a vessel is a criminal offence and can lead to severe consequences, including criminal charges.
The force noted that the effects of alcohol and drugs can be amplified on the water due to exposure to sun, wind and waves, increasing the risk of serious or fatal incidents.
