The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is encouraging parents and caregivers to teach children about personal safety and how to respond to potentially dangerous situations when they are away from their guardians.

The RNC says street-proofing can help children recognize situations that make them uncomfortable, identify potential risks and make safer decisions when out on their own.

The RNC recommends parents and caregivers review the following safety tips with children:

  • Memorize important information, including their full name, home address and emergency phone numbers.

  • Avoid approaching strangers.

  • Keep their distance from unfamiliar vehicles.

  • Never get into a stranger’s vehicle.

  • Avoid lengthy conversations with strangers.

  • Never accept gifts from strangers.

  • Walk to and from school or the bus stop with a parent, sibling or friends.

  • If confronted by a stranger, do whatever is necessary to get away safely.

The RNC encourages families to discuss these precautions with children to help them recognize risks and respond appropriately when they feel unsafe.
