RNC deploy spike belt to stop fleeing driver

Just before midnight, the RNC attempted to stop a vehicle on Mundy Pond Road, St. John’s, but the driver refused to stop.

Officers did not pursue in the interest of public safety. A short while later, other officers located the vehicle and deployed a spike belt on Topsail Road. A pursuit was initiated at this time, and the suspect fled despite having two flat tires. The pursuit was terminated in the interest of public safety as the driver headed towards downtown.

Officers located the immobilized vehicle in the downtown area and were able to arrest the driver. The 43-year-old male was conveyed to the St. John’s lockup; charged with flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, impaired driving and refusal of a breath demand.
