Rain to move in across Newfoundland overnight

Tonight across Newfoundland, a system moving in from the west will bring a transition to wet and foggy conditions for almost the entire island.


Eastern & Central NL

  • Conditions: Skies will cloud over early this evening as rain or drizzle moves in. Expect 5–10 mm of accumulation for most areas.

  • Visibility: Fog patches are expected to develop around midnight.

  • Wind: Southern and eastern coasts (St. John's, Bonavista, Gander) will see south to southeast winds at 30 km/h gusting to 50, with gusts reaching 70 km/h along exposed parts of the coast overnight.

  • Lows: Ranging from 7°C to 9°C.


Southern & Western NL

  • Conditions: Rain will be more persistent here, with heavier amounts. Port aux Basques could see 40–50 mm of rain tonight, while Burgeo and the South Coast are looking at 20–30 mm.

  • Wreckhouse: Winds will gust to 100 km/h early this evening before diminishing.

  • Visibility: Widespread fog patches will develop through the evening and overnight.

  • Lows: Generally between 4°C and 8°C.


Northern Peninsula

  • Conditions: Mostly cloudy with rain or drizzle beginning near midnight, totalling about 10 mm.

  • Visibility: Fog patches expected to set in by midnight.

  • Lows: Steady near 3°C to 7°C.

Western Labrador & Churchill Falls

  • Labrador City & Wabush: Staying cloudy. A northwest wind at 20 km/h will bring the temperature down to -4°C, making it feel like -10 overnight with the wind chill.

  • Churchill Falls: Periods of snow or rain will wrap up around midnight, followed by cloudy skies and a 40% chance of flurries. Expect about 2 cm of snow and a low of -2°C.

Central & Northern Labrador

  • Lake Melville & Hopedale: Rain will end near midnight with skies partially clearing in the Upper Lake Melville area. Lows will stay just above freezing at +2°C.

  • Nain: Rain or snow will change over to just snow around midnight. Expect about 2 cm of accumulation and a low of 0°C. Northwest winds will pick up, gusting to 40 km/h.

Southeastern Labrador & The Straits

  • Cartwright to Lodge Bay: Rain will move in this evening, with 10 mm expected for southern sections. Winds will be breezy from the southeast at 40–60 km/h. Lows near +4°C.

  • The Straits (Red Bay to L'Anse-au-Clair): Expect a wet night with rain at times heavy (20–30 mm) ending toward morning. Fog patches will be persistent with a low of +3°C.
