Public invited to weigh in on proposed Highway Traffic Act changes

The provincial government is asking the public for feedback on potential changes to Newfoundland and Labrador’s Highway Traffic Act.

The consultation is intended to ensure the legislation remains up to date and addresses evolving road safety concerns.

The government is seeking feedback in four key areas:

1. E-bikes, e-scooters and other micro-mobility devices;

2. Car and booster seats for children;

3. Bicycle safety for children; and

4. Driving schools.

The focus areas are based on recommendations from several stakeholder organizations, including Parachute, the Child Passenger Safety Association of Canada, Child Safety Link and the Child Death Review Committee.

Residents are also encouraged to provide feedback on other road safety issues they believe should be addressed.

Feedback can be submitted through an online questionnaire on EngageNL. Anyone who does not already have an account will need to create one to participate.

Written submissions can also be emailed to roadsafetyfeedback@gov.nl.ca or mailed to the Department of Government Services at the Confederation Building in St. John’s.

The deadline for submissions is Sept. 3, 2026.

The government says feedback from the consultation will help inform proposed legislative amendments for the fall sitting of the House of Assembly.

A “What We Heard” report will be released following the consultation.
