Province Seeks Public Input on New Supported Decision-Making Framework

The provincial government has launched a public engagement process to help shape a new framework for substitute and supported decision-making in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Departments of Seniors, Social Supports and Well-Being and Justice and Public Safety announced the initiative Tuesday, saying the framework is intended to support adults in making their own decisions with assistance from trusted individuals when needed, rather than having decisions made on their behalf.

Currently, Newfoundland and Labrador does not have legislation that formally recognizes supported decision-making. The province says a new framework would guide the development of updated laws and policies, making supported decision-making an option for people who require additional support while promoting greater participation in decisions that affect their lives.

As part of the consultation, government has launched a second questionnaire, building on feedback gathered during previous engagement efforts. Officials say the goal is to modernize the province's decision-making policies and ensure individuals are supported to participate as fully as possible in decision-making processes.
