The provincial government says a proposed wind-hydrogen development at the Port of Argentia is moving in a new direction, with the proponent now focusing solely on wind energy.
In an update, Energy and Mines Minister Lloyd Parrott said Argentia Renewables, a subsidiary of Pattern Energy, has shifted its plans away from a 300-megawatt wind-hydrogen project toward a wind-only development.
The project, located at the Port of Argentia, had been pursuing wind-generated hydrogen production as part of its original proposal.
The province had established a contingency land reserve in April 2024 to support the project, allowing the company to apply for Crown land if additional turbines were required to maintain the planned 300-megawatt capacity.
According to the update, Pattern Energy has indicated it remains committed to Argentia and the province despite the change in focus.
The reserve covers approximately 2,457 hectares and was initially created under the Wind Energy Contingency Land Reserve Order on March 27, 2024. A Wind Reserve Consideration Letter was issued days later to Argentia Renewables Wind LP, outlining the potential use of Crown lands tied to the project’s first phase.
No further details were provided on timelines for the revised wind-only project.
