The Newfoundland and Labrador government is replacing more than 100 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in schools across the province.

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development says the devices are outdated or nearing the end of their operational effectiveness and need to be replaced.

Budget 2026 includes approximately $250,000 for the replacement of AEDs and defibrillator pads, ensuring schools have up-to-date equipment available in the event of a cardiac emergency.

A cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. AEDs deliver an electric shock to help restore the heart’s normal rhythm.

The department says AEDs, when used alongside calling 9-1-1 or emergency services and performing CPR, can double a person’s chance of surviving cardiac arrest.

The investment is intended to help school communities respond quickly if a student, staff member or visitor experiences a cardiac arrest.
