The provincial government said it had begun taking steps to improve operations within the Provincial Court system and enhance access to justice across the province.

Justice and Public Safety Minister Helen Conway Ottenheimer received findings and recommendations from a Provincial Court working group examining the root causes of ongoing staffing shortages and operational pressures.

According to the report, the challenges facing the court system had developed over time and were linked to a growing number of complex cases requiring additional time and resources, increasing workloads without matching resource levels, and persistent staff vacancies.

The working group identified several areas for improvement, including recruitment and retention of court staff such as sheriff’s officers and court officers, infrastructure upgrades, expanded use of technology, and measures to improve access to justice. The report noted that addressing these issues could require additional funding and potential legislative changes.

The Provincial Court was expected to remain fully operational as the work continued. Government said it would keep working with the courts to advance short-, medium- and long-term improvements.
