The Newfoundland and Labrador government has launched a major traffic study aimed at improving safety and reducing congestion along one of the province’s busiest transportation corridors.
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure has issued a request for proposals for a two-phase study examining traffic flow along Pitts Memorial Drive and the interchange with the Trans-Canada Highway.
The first phase will assess current traffic conditions on Pitts Memorial Drive from Foxtrap to the CNR Viaduct in downtown St. John’s, and along the Trans-Canada Highway from Paddy’s Pond (Exit 40) to Allandale Road (Exit 46). The review will also include connecting roads, ramps, intersections and nearby overpasses.
According to the province, the study will identify areas where congestion occurs, evaluate the impact of traffic delays on motorists and examine potential safety concerns. Consultants will also consider possible improvements, including the addition of a new driving lane on the Trans-Canada Highway and the construction of new highway interchanges at key locations.
The second phase will focus on the Cloverleaf Overpass interchange, where Pitts Memorial Drive meets the Trans-Canada Highway. The study will evaluate options for upgrading or replacing the existing interchange, including modifications to the current design and the development of entirely new interchange concepts.
