Province Expands Indigenous Cultural Programming in Correctional Facilities

The provincial government announced it is expanding Indigenous cultural programming at correctional facilities across Newfoundland and Labrador through approximately $270,000 in grant funding.

Justice and Public Safety Minister Helen Conway Ottenheimer said the funding will enhance rehabilitation supports for Indigenous inmates by strengthening cultural connections, identity and well-being through partnerships with Indigenous governments, organizations and community groups.

Under the funding, the Nunatsiavut Government and Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation will continue delivering in-reach cultural programming at the Labrador Correctional Centre.

The Newfoundland Aboriginal Women's Network will also begin offering cultural programming and support services at the Bishop Falls Correctional Centre and the West Coast Correctional Centre.

The province said work is also underway to expand Indigenous cultural programming to the Clarenville Correctional Centre and Her Majesty's Penitentiary. Discussions are continuing with Indigenous partners as part of a plan to establish a province-wide approach to Indigenous cultural programming and supports in correctional facilities.
