The provincial government announced a $2.9-million investment Thursday to support the development of 20 transitional care beds in Labrador through a partnership with the Nunatsiavut Government.

The funding, included in Budget 2026, was announced by Lela Evans. The new beds are intended to provide residents with culturally safe care closer to home while helping to reduce pressure on acute care services at the Labrador Health Centre.

According to the province, the additional transitional care capacity will help improve access to hospital services by ensuring patients who no longer require acute care can receive appropriate support in a more suitable setting.

The location of the new beds has not yet been determined and will be decided in consultation with community partners.

The investment is part of a broader effort to strengthen health-care services in Labrador. Other health-care initiatives include a new MRI machine for Happy Valley-Goose Bay, redevelopment of the Paddon Home to expand long-term care capacity, and the addition of eight transitional care beds at the Labrador Health Centre.
