Powerful Storm Impacting Parts of the Province

A potent weather system is already delivering some snow to the southern Avalon Peninsula and will reach the northern Avalon in a couple of hours.

For the Avalon Peninsula southeast, St. John's, the northern Avalon Peninsula and the Bonavista Peninsula, the low is expected to bring 25 to 40 centimetres of snow.

The Avalon Peninsula southwest will see 15 to 30 cm as will Bonavista North and the northern tip of the Northern Peninsula. From Clarenville along the coast to Green Bay - White Bay, excluding the Bonavista Peninsula and Bonavista North, 15 cm of snow is possible.

Winds will be quite gusty also across the Avalon specifically with gusts to 80 km/h expected for most areas. Coastal areas of the southern Avalon could see gusts to 100 km/h.

Ahead of the storm, schools on the Avalon Peninsula are closing early and since the system is expected to persist overnight and Friday in some areas, schools could be closed tomorrow.

When the storm gets going, travelling will be dangerous in areas of heavy snow and whiteout conditions.

For coastal Labrador, heavy snow and strong winds are expected on Friday and will continue through the weekend.
