Powerful low to impact most of the province
A disorganized area of low pressure will push across Newfoundland and parts of Labrador beginning this afternoon.
Snow will spread across western and central Newfoundland this afternoon while rain is expected for the south coast and the Avalon Peninsula.
Precipitation will continue overnight and into Monday. For southeastern Labrador 10 to 25 cm of snow is likely. Across western Newfoundland, central, and parts of the south coast, east to about Harbour Breton, 10 to 25 cm of snow is expected.
Across the Avalon, Burin, and Bonavista Peninsulas, rain will be the dominant form of precipitation. Rainfall amounts will range from 10 to 20 mm.
On Monday some areas will see the precipitation wind down in the afternoon but very strong winds are expected behind the low. For southeastern Labrador wind gusts to 100 km/h are expected. The Northern Peninsula through to the Corner Brook area will see wind gusts to 80 km/h, in Gander wind gusts to 90 km/h are expected, and for the Avalon Peninsula wind gusts to 110 km/h are expected. Power outages are possible.
Marine Atlantic has cancelled departures for this evening and anticipates a potential impact to departures on Monday morning.
A separate pulse of energy will move in on Tuesday. While this low will not be as strong, it will bring snow to much of Newfoundland. Even the Avalon Peninsula could see some snow from this feature.
