Over 30 cm of snow expected for portions of the Island

An area of low pressure will pass south of Newfoundland tonight bringing snow and ice pellets to the Avalon and snow to most of the south coast and portions of central Newfoundland.

Precipitation will begin tonight and continue through the day on Tuesday and finally come to an end on Wednesday morning.

Winds will be strong for some areas with gusts between 70 and 90 km/h on the Avalon, gusts to 70 and 90 km/h on the Burin Peninsula through to Clarenville and wind gusts near 60 km/h in Gander. The winds will be the strongest on Tuesday morning.

Snowfall forecast:

• St. John's 35-45 cm (Ice pellets likely at times)

• Trepassey 15-20 cm (Ice pellets likely at times)

• Carbonear 35-40 cm (Ice pellets likely at times)

• Placentia 25-35 cm (Ice pellets likely at times)

• Marystown 30-35 cm

• Clarenville 25-35 cm

• Gander 10-15 cm
