The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador says it supports federal legislation aimed at strengthening national action to prevent intimate partner violence.
The province says Bill S-242, also known as Georgina’s Law, calls for coordinated efforts across jurisdictions focused on prevention, protection and support for survivors. The bill is named after Georgina McGrath Power, a survivor and advocate from Branch, and was advanced with the help of Sen. Fabian Manning.
Officials say the province will continue pushing for stronger supports, including community-led prevention initiatives, trauma-informed training for justice and law enforcement personnel, and expanded access to legal services for survivors. The provincial government, along with opposition parties, has also sent a letter of support for the bill to Manning.
