New Churchill Falls agreement passes House of Assembly

The province has a new Churchill Falls agreement.

On Thursday evening, the House of Assembly passed the Churchill Falls Resolution. The motion passed by a vote of 21 to 18.

There were four days of debate and questions from experts.

The new agreement is essentially a new long-term energy arrangement involving Churchill Falls, Gull Island, transmission, pricing, access to power, and federal financing.

The agreement's Schedule B says NL Hydro can ultimately have access to up to 2,350 MW from the development projects, rising to 2,750 MW if the proposed wind project is completed.

Quebec gets up to 6,915 MW from the development projects, rising to 8,515 MW with the wind project.

Newfoundland and Labrador owns 60 percent of Gull Island, but Quebec gets 84 percent of the power.

The original 1969 Churchill Falls contract committed most of the power from the Churchill Falls generating station to Hydro-Québec at extremely low fixed prices.
