The National War Memorial in downtown St. John’s will be closed to the public on Monday as crews carry out treatment efforts targeting the invasive Japanese beetle.
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure announced the memorial, located at 92 Water Street, will be closed on July 6, weather permitting, to accommodate spraying as part of an ongoing Japanese beetle control program in the city.
Officials say the treatment program will use a larvicide designed to target the pests. The product is registered by Health Canada and approved for use in Newfoundland and Labrador under the Environmental Protection Act for pest control purposes.
The Japanese beetle is considered an invasive species and poses a threat to the province’s agriculture and forestry sectors.
The National War Memorial is expected to reopen to the public on July 7.
