NL Health Services is temporarily reinstating mandatory masking in clinical areas at hospitals and health-care facilities across Newfoundland and Labrador, including long-term care facilities.

The requirement takes effect Wednesday, November 4, at 8:00 a.m. and applies to visitors, support persons, outpatients and health-care workers.

The change comes as health-care facilities report an increase in respiratory illnesses. NL Health Services says the measures are intended to help reduce the spread of infection and protect patients, residents, visitors and staff.

Under the updated requirements, visitors, support persons and outpatients, including those attending emergency departments, must wear a well-fitted medical mask in all clinical and waiting areas, as well as when visiting patients and long-term care residents.

Patients admitted to hospital and long-term care residents are not required to wear masks.

Anyone seeking or receiving health-care services who has respiratory symptoms, COVID-19 symptoms or a rash must wear a mask at all times while inside a health-care facility.

Visitors and support persons who are feeling unwell are asked not to visit patients or residents or accompany others to appointments.

Medical masks can be brought from home or obtained at facility entrances. Cloth masks and masks with exhalation valves are not permitted.

The updated guidelines will remain under review as NL Health Services monitors respiratory illness cases, hospitalizations and outbreaks. The masking requirements will be re-evaluated by March 31, 2027.
