Residents visiting health-care facilities across Newfoundland and Labrador will no longer be required to wear masks in most clinical areas starting April 1.
The change, announced today, follows ongoing monitoring of respiratory illness trends within the province and its health-care system.
Under the updated guidelines, masks will not be mandatory for visitors, patients and support persons in clinical settings — including waiting rooms, treatment areas and during visits with patients or long-term care residents — as long as individuals pass required self-screening for illness.
However, health officials say masking rules could be reinstated in specific facilities if an outbreak occurs.
Mask use will still be required for anyone entering a facility with symptoms of COVID-19, other respiratory illnesses or certain conditions such as a rash. Those who are feeling unwell are also being asked not to visit patients or attend appointments as support persons.
Masks will continue to be available at all health-care sites, and individuals who choose to keep wearing one are encouraged to do so. Masking may be especially important when visiting people at higher risk of severe illness, including seniors, young children and those with underlying health conditions or weakened immune systems.
